Pinguicula, commonly known as Butterworts, are a delightful addition to any indoor plant collection. These small carnivorous plants are not only easy to care for but also boast stunning bright pink flowers. Beyond their beauty, Butterworts play a practical role in controlling fungus gnats, making them both attractive and beneficial.

Pinguicula 'Sethos' is a hybrid between P. ehlersiae and P. moranensis, and they are known for the bright pink hue their leaves will develop if placed under very bright light.

Check out our Pinguicula care advice here. The main points to note are:

Growing Medium: Butterworts have unique requirements, preferring not to be grown in traditional soil. Instead, we cultivate them in perlite or sphagnum moss, although sandy peat moss, vermiculite, and other hydroponic mediums are also suitable alternatives. Avoid fertilisers, as they can be harmful to the plants.

Watering: These plants thrive when bottom-watered with room temperature tap water. While some recommend distilled water, metropolitan Melbourne tap water generally suffices unless it's particularly hard. Rainwater is the ideal choice. Keep the medium moist by allowing it to sit in 1 - 2 cm of water, and wait until it has partially dried out before rewatering.

Root System: Butterworts have fine, thread-like roots primarily used for anchoring. It's common for these plants to dislodge from their medium; simply place them back on the surface, and they'll reestablish themselves.

Environment: As bog plants, Butterworts flourish in conditions that mimic their natural wetland habitats.

Dormancy: Please note that Pinguicula can enter dormancy in colder weather, with leaves shrinking and losing their carnivorous function. To maintain them in an active state, we keep them in a heated environment, ensuring they remain carnivorous upon arrival.

The plants pictured represent what you'll receive. These plants are not currently flowering, and are still in or just coming out of their dormant phase. They will grow larger fairly quickly once they enter their active phase again.

Each plant will be sent bare-rooted, as shown in the last few photos, with a pot and media included for immediate potting upon arrival. This method ensures the plants arrive in the best condition, ready to thrive in their new home. We've found that they do not travel well when sent in their pot, as their leaves are too delicate. The pot and medium (perlite topped with sphagnum moss) shown in the first few photos will be included.

Shipping

This plant will be sent in its 50 mm plastic growing pot. It is growing in sphagnum moss and perlite. We only ship plants to non-quarantine states (sorry sorry WA, TAS and NT residents). Shipping of plants is capped at $18.00 per order. This includes the packing materials and labour times. We use recycled packing where possible to reduce our waste and keep cost down, but we ensure that all packing material is sturdy enough to resist damage during transit. If no one is home to receive your order, the parcel will be left in a safe place. We will not request signature on delivery, as parcels sent back to the post office may not get picked up for days, therefore increasing the amount of stress placed on the plant(s) inside. This plant can also be picked up from the Northern Wellbeing Centre; 113C miller st, Epping VIC.
